Fish for Free from the Pier
at Los Muertos Beach

Everyone living in or visiting Puerto Vallarta sees the fishermen on the beaches and piers relentlessly casting hand lines.  This month we are going to tell you what they are trying to catch and what they actually catch.  Just imagine that there is something to do in Vallarta that is FREE.

The pier at Los Muertos beach is always a favorite spot for fishermen.  In the last week of January it became a 'Standing Room Only' situation when the succulent Sierra showed up.  With the help of a few cast nets, there was an abundance of sardines and goggle eyes and these certainly did the trick to hook the Sierra.  The pier was a melting pot of individuals, young and old, locals and even a few tourists with assorted bleach bottles that were wrapped with line.  This was a beautiful sight and we all realized that fishing is something that everyone can do.  You do not need Penn Gold International gear and a luxury boat to enjoy the sport and spirit of fishing, it is here for all to enjoy in Vallarta.

There are lots of great locations for surf-casting as well.  Hooking a Roosterfish from the beach is definitely the highlight of any fisherman's day and although this is not a simple task, it is quite possible.  Los Carreyeros, a beach that is just south of Sayulita is a good place to start.  And if anyone wants to supplement their income while on vacation, bring dive gear and you could find a pretty good number of pricey Ranger lures that Phil has lost there.

The jetties edging the Marina in Nuevo Vallarta are a nice option as well and although Phil is not a fly fisherman, he has seen several parties fly casting in this area.  The beaches of Nuevo Vallarta are worth a try when you see birds working also.  When the sardines move in to the shore, Punta Negra to the south of Vallarta is great for good sized Toro, not good to eat but very impressive fighters.  Be sure to bring your spinning or fly casting gear next time you visit Puerto Vallarta.  Give Phil and call and he will try to point you in the right direction.  In Vallarta: 221-5402
